Habitat for Humanity

habitat.jpgHabitat for Humanity "seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action."

Habitat for Humanity partners with churches and businesses in the community to help provide housing for applicants who cannot otherwise afford it.  Every Habitat Affiliate chooses it's homeowners based on the same three criteria.

1. The applicants' level of need.

2. Their willingness to become partners in the program. This includes numerous hours working to build other Habitat homes.

3. Their ability to repay the no-profit, no interest loan.

The house is sold at no profit, with much of the labor and materials donated. This gives the recipients a great new financial start with a mortgage that they can afford. Because these applicants are carefully chosen, have put in many hours of "sweat equity," and have put up a down payment on their home, they are usually very proud of and good stewards of their home, being appreciative and grateful.

There are many reasons for High Pointe members and visitors to be a part of this

  • Members will bond together as they serve with other Christians. The closeness that comes from working alongside other Christians for a good cause far exceeds 5 or 10 minutes of socializing in a church building. This memorable experience can help members get to know one another and develop new friendships.
  • Habitat is a great way to reach non-Christians and seekers. Most every time before Jesus taught or preached, he healed people. He also spent time with those he tried to reach. In Habitat, members work alongside the families who are receiving the houses. Through this love and service, doors are opened up to share Christ. Habitat is also something that members can invite their friends from work or the neighborhood to participate in, which can be another bonding experience.
  • Habitat is a great way to shine our light in the community. Jesus said that we should do good deeds before others so that the world would praise our Father in heaven (Mt. 5:14-16). Building homes for the poor is something that even those outside of Christ commend. In fact, it is what they think that we ought to be doing.

An orientation class is required for all volunteers or future volunteers.  If you have already taken this class you will not need to repeat it. Taking the orientation class will give you the flexibility to help whenever you do have the time.  Orientation is open for anyone 16 years and older.  There are so many ways to serve, there is something for everyone!

Volunteers are needed to help build houses and/or clear lots.  No prior building experience is necessary--workers will be trained on the job!  Our goal is to have several volunteer groups from High Pointe consisting of 10 - 20 people meeting once a month.
