History of the High Pointe Church of Christ

In 1917, three men, Lex Lowery, George Hardin and Floyd Scott decided to begin meeting as a congregation in the homes of Brother Hardin and Brother Scott. Both families lived on Benge Street. They met one Sunday in Bro. Hardin’s home and the next Sunday in Bro. Scott’s home. This was the beginning of what we now call High Pointe Church of Christ.

The congregation met in homes until the Spring of 1918, when they rented the Presbyterian Church building on the southwest corner of Church and Davis Streets. It was an old, large, wooden building with very high steps in the front.  The Lord’s church met there for about 2 ½ years. Beginning in 1920, the congregation rented the Pope Theater and the R & R America Theater, until they purchased a house on Wilcox Street.

In the Summer of 1923, the church remodeled the house at 409 South Wilcox Street, and moved in with a membership of 161.  They continued to meet as the Wilcox Street Church of Christ for twenty-three years.

On August 18, 1946, the congregation moved into a beautiful new building on the corner of Davis and Church Streets.  Our members who met in the Davis Street Church of Christ fondly remember how beautiful the singing was in that auditorium with the low ceilings. The musty smell of the basement is also a childhood memory for many. In 1965, the Hunt Street congregation began meeting with the Davis Street congregation. Attendance at Davis Street grew to between 250 and 300 each Sunday.

Having outgrown its Davis Street property, the church opened a new building in April 1972 at 2100 White Avenue, on what was then the west side of McKinney. The new name was the Westside Church of Christ, and the preacher was Frank Morgan. In 1982, Tom Gaumer came to preach. By the late 1980s the congregation reached the capacity of the 450 seat auditorium, and began conducting two Sunday morning services. In 1990 the congregation purchased 17 acres at Hwy 75 and Wilmeth Road. Within a couple of years, a Facilities Planning and fundraising process was underway to accommodate the church family’s vision of growth and ministry. In the late 1990s, Westside expanded its youth and children’s ministries, began mission work in El Salvador, opened a clothes closet for the community, and established a preschool. Bryan Barrett began preaching at the early service and Bro. Gaumer preached for the late service.  During the construction of the new building, from May 1999 – January 2001, the congregation met in Faubion Middle School where attendance continued to grow. Mike Lewis became the preacher in 1999.

In early 2001, the congregation, now called the High Pointe Church of Christ, moved into the new facility at 3201 N. Central Expressway. The congregation realized its goal to become a more regional church with members from many of the surrounding communities, and has grown to over 1000 members. Following Mike Lewis in the pulpit have been James Nored, interim preachers Bryan Sharp and Don Hebbard, and our current minister, Brad Cox.  During the years at the High Pointe location, the congregation has enjoyed the use of the facility for growing many ministries within the congregation and reaching out to the community. We continue to look to God as he leads us to learn and grow and connect and serve.
